A paper leaf garland brings fall color to a table without using fresh foliage that can wilt. Cut a few repeated leaf shapes, string them with generous spacing and lay the finished strand along the center of the table.
Choose materials that suit the project
Choose lightweight cardstock that bends slightly without tearing. Two or three coordinated colors make the leaves easy to see while keeping the display calm; avoid glitter or loose decorations near food.
Make it neatly
A blunt needle and cotton thread make a neat stringing method. If children are helping, an adult can pre-punch the holes and thread the garland while younger makers sort colors and arrange the leaves.
Display and store
Let adhesives and finishes dry completely before styling the finished piece. Keep it away from damp surfaces and direct heat, and store it flat or in a shallow box so delicate details stay in place.
Make a repeatable template
Draw a simple leaf with a short stem on scrap paper. Cut it out, then trace the shape onto cardstock in several colors.
Cut and punch
Cut out the leaves carefully. Punch one small hole near the stem on each leaf, keeping the hole far enough from the edge to prevent tearing.
Plan the sequence
Arrange the leaves on a table before threading. Alternate colors and leave a few inches between them so the shapes remain distinct.
String and style
Thread the leaves onto cotton string with a blunt needle, tying a small stop knot at each end. Lay the strand along the table and keep it clear of candles and serving dishes.

Good to know
Common questions
How long should the garland be?
Measure the table and add a little extra for a gentle curve. Keep ends short enough that they cannot catch on chairs.
Can I use printer paper?
Cardstock holds its shape better. Printer paper works for a short indoor display but can curl more easily.
How should I store it?
Coil it loosely around a flat piece of cardboard and store it in a dry box so the leaves do not crease.
