A gratitude tree gives everyone a small, low-pressure way to share something they appreciate. Bare branches in a sturdy vase hold paper leaves that guests can write on and add throughout the week.

Choose materials that suit the project

Use clean, dry branches with enough smaller twigs to hold lightweight paper leaves. A wide, heavy vessel is safer than a narrow vase; add clean pebbles or wrapped weights at the bottom if the branches feel top-heavy.

Make it neatly

Cut leaves from colored paper, punch a small hole near each stem and tie on short loops of cotton thread. Keep prompts optional and simple—people can write a word, draw a picture or leave a leaf blank.

Display and store

Let adhesives and finishes dry completely before styling the finished piece. Keep it away from damp surfaces and direct heat, and store it flat or in a shallow box so delicate details stay in place.

01

Select and clean branches

Gather dry fallen branches with several small offshoots. Brush away loose debris and trim only loose or sharp ends.

02

Build a stable base

Set branches in a wide vase. Add clean pebbles around the stems until they stand upright without leaning; test the arrangement away from table edges.

Cut paper leaves

Trace a simple leaf shape on cardstock and cut a mix of colors. Punch a small hole near the stem and thread a short loop through each one.

Add prompts and display

Place markers and blank leaves beside the tree. Invite family to add a note when they like, then keep the tree clear of candles and walkways.

Good to know

Common questions

How do I keep the branches upright?

Choose a wide, heavy container and pack clean pebbles around the stems. If it still wobbles, use fewer branches.

What can children write on the leaves?

Use simple prompts such as a favorite meal, a helpful person or something that made them smile. Drawing is an easy alternative.

Can the tree be reused?

Yes. Remove paper leaves after the holiday, store them flat, and reuse the branches next year if they remain clean and dry.
